Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
The children and staff were delighted to meet Mr Simon Smith, Salford Diocese Catholic Director of Education on Monday 4th October.
Children helped design a banner for COP26. Camino de Santiago known in English as the Way of St. James, is a network of pilgrims' ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where tradition holds that the remains of the apostle are buried. Camino are walking 500 miles to COP26 in Glasgow and passed through Newton-in-Bowland on Tuesday. The banner will make its way to Glasgow for COP26 and it will then be taken on another march in November. Two of our junior boys, Owen and Callum, took the school's banner to Newton Village Hall, where they both spoke about being a plastic free school, how they loved being a forest school where they actually got to learn in the forest, how they learn about deforestation and other environmental issues and how lucky they feel to live in the country side in a lovely place. They even did a little recorded interview which will appear on COP26 socials.
The children in school are following news about COP26 - the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties in Glasgow on 31st October – 12th November 2021. After finding out more about the conference, the juniors have decided to make their own messages and to create their own countdown to the event.
The pupils' animal crafts looked spectacular at the Wood End Open Farm on Sunday. Many visitors enjoyed counting the animals along the meadow trail at the farm. The Friends of Thorneyholme helped raised just over £200 on the Jar-rolla stall, with and additional £100 in donations. A huge thank you to all those that supported the event. All the money raised will benefit the pupils at school.
The whole school recently came together to clean up the school grounds. The children already have a very good understanding of the importance of caring for our environment and this particular litter picking session highlighted how litter is not always due to the choices people make with their unwanted items, but can also be due to 'wear and tear'. Science became part of the discussions about the biodegradable nature of certain materials.
Year 6 were presented with their Leavers' Hoodies this week. The children are wearing these with pride and as a reminder of their responsibilities as the eldest pupils in the school.
Yesterday was Mrs Smith's last day as Headteacher of Thorneyholme. Not only do we all wish her many thanks for all her hard work and a very 'fond farewell', but a very Happy Retirement.
We were absolutely delighted to have welcomed back some of our infant and junior pupils on Monday 22nd June 2020. The children have settled in well to their new routines and are enjoying being back at school with their friends.
