The school was delighted to welcome Sheila Kanani to school on 21st May 2019. Sheila Kanani is a British astronomer and the Education, Outreach and Diversity Officer at the Royal Astronomical Society, who has presented programmes for the BBC. She won the Inspiring Women in Technology award and is also an author.
Pupils learnt many new and exciting facts about space, as well as how Sheila became a Space Scientist. Astronaut training workshops during her visit included: making and testing space bones, cracking Russian codes, designing a space meal, reaction testing, measuring their height in space and manipulating objects while wearing a pressurised spacesuit gloves.
Sheila Kanani talked about her children's books and signed copies of them. She has written two books, Space on Earth and How to be an Astronaut.
The junior children enjoyed a day learning about The 6 Habits Mindset, which comprises of: attitude, behaviour, courage, determination, enthusiasm and friendship. The 6 Habits Mindset helps to build children’s resilience, shape their character and improve their overall health and wellbeing. Children enjoyed role play and participating in numerous activities which allowed them to apply their learning.
Thorneyholme School were invited, by The Duchy of Lancaster, to be involved in planting an avenue of trees near Whitewell. So on Thursday 7th March, Class 1 braved the elements and went to meet the planting team. The children planted a beech tree and learnt about the other 49 oak, lime, sycamore and beech trees that are to be planted. The intention is to enhance the existing woodland on the estate as well as creating something meaningful and long-lasting – and it certainly was meaningful for everyone involved. Both the children and staff are looking forward to watching their tree grow.
Thorneyholme is recognised as a being a SILVER Rights Aware school by UNICEF. The Silver Award acknowledges that our school community is fully aware of the articles enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) and that these articles are reflected in the school's ethos, practice and environment.

What is a Rights Respecting School?
UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.
Safer Internet Day 2019 was celebrated globally on Tuesday 5th February 2019 with the slogan “Together for a better internet”, the day provided a fantastic opportunity to engage with children about their digital lives.
Our day started with an assembly - thinking about what we love about the internet, how we can be kind and respectful to others online, and what we can do to keep ourselves safe when using it.
The rest of the day was spent on activities which will enabled the children to recognise how to make good choices online and exploring 'permission' - asking for and giving.
To help you talk to your children about having a positive and safe time online, there is a great pack that has been created for parents and carers, including conversation starters, a factsheet, family pledge card and more!

Fitness February
All the children and staff are raising money for Cancer Research this month by taking on Fitness February, a 28 day challenge. Daily exercise will be timetabled into the school timetable and children will be encouraged to continue exercising at home. Children will all keep a Wellness diary over the month, recording: exercise, sleep, mood, food and water. This challenge will not only promote the importance of helping others across the UK but also the importance of healthy lifestyles (UN Article 24) and mental wellbeing.
As an additional bonus - both children and staff are to come in trainers (rather than school shoes) for the entire month.

A few days before the Christmas holidays began, the junior children entertained the residents of Clitheroe High Brake Care Home, with carols and musical instruments (hand bells accompanied Jingle Bells and Ding Dong Merrily on High, whilst a couple of our pupils played the french horn and cello). The residents tapped their feet along to the music, sang along to the carols and helped look after the children's jumpers when it all got a little too hot! The children enjoyed bringing Christmas cheer to the residents and it brought the true meaning of advent to life by being able to give something to others.
On the very last day of term, the children enjoyed our Christmas party! Games included the traditional pass the parcel, a memory game of 23 items on a tray and musical chairs. Thorneyholme was also very fortunate to get a visit from Father Christmas. Father Christmas enjoyed listening to children sing 'Snow Business' (a medley of Christmas songs) and he commented on how all the children were delightful!
Last week, the junior children enjoyed a trip to Browsholme Hall, as part of their history topic about the local area. Children learnt about the history of the Parker Family, how portraits can tell you about the past, the differences between homes now and then and a timeline of some of the different artefacts. On return to school, the children wrote TripAdvisor Reviews. Samuel likened Browsholme Hall to an old, wonderful world with ancient artefacts and Madeleine thought it was a fabulous visit; the guides gave them all some very interesting historical facts! Many thanks to Mr & Mrs Parker for allowing our children to 'invade' their home!
