  • Thorneyholme Primary School become 'Gift Of Books' collection point

    Tue 13 Mar 2018

We are happy to announce that we have become a collection point for a unique crowdsourcing campaign that has been launched in Greater Manchester with the aim of reducing book poverty for the region’s most disadvantaged school children.

The “Gift of Books” campaign, which was launched on World Book Day 2018 is calling on the people of Greater Manchester to donate a copy of their favourite childhood book, which in turn will be gifted to one of the 40,000 children in Greater Manchester who have no books of their own.

Students and parents can now donate their favourite books to Thorneyholme RC Primary School, Dunsop Bridge, with a note inside to say why they enjoyed their book so much, this can be downloaded from here: https://www.cartridgesave.co.uk/printwhatmatters/gift-of-books/ where you can also find more information about the campaign, including where all the collection points are located.

Once the books have been collected they will be redistributed to the children in Manchester who are are not fortunate to own one themselves. These Children will be identified by the National Literacy trust who tackle literacy issues in communities across the UK where low levels of literacy are seriously impacting on people’s lives.

The initiative is a joint partnership between Stockport business cartridgesave.co.uk and the National Literacy Trust. Collection points will pop up in the region between now and 31st May, allowing Greater Manchester book lovers to share their love of the printed word.

How donating a book will make a difference: five key facts facts

    1.     One in eight of the most disadvantaged children in Greater Manchester say they don’t have a book of their own at home.

    2.     In England the median hourly wage of workers with the highest levels of literacy is 94 per cent higher than for workers who have the lowest levels of literacy.

    3.     Reading for pleasure is more important for children's cognitive development than their parents' level of education and is a more powerful factor in life achievement than socio-economic background.

    4.     Low levels of literacy cost the UK an estimated £81 billion a year in lost earnings and increased welfare spending impacting on the economy as a whole.

    5.     Literacy has been found to have a relationship with depression. 36 per cent of those with low literacy were found to have depressive symptoms, compared to 20 per cent of those with the highest levels of literacy.

  • Sensational Singing at the Sing Together Concert

    Tue 13 Mar 2018

Our very talented junior children performed at the Sing Together Concert, King George's Hall.  Children sang a range of entertaining songs from the Rattle Snake Sake to A Curious Tale, in different keys and they even accompanied one song with sign language!  The audience joined in with dance moves and held up the flashlight on their mobile phones.  All the children thoroughly enjoyed it, even those who were a little apprehensive before the day.  Well done, to all our children, we are all proud of you!

  • GIFT OF BOOKS

    Wed 07 Mar 2018
As part of this year's Lenten Journey, our school has become a collection point for the local community to give the gift of a book to a child in need, who lives in Greater Manchester.

GIFT OF BOOKS: GIVE A BOOK TO A CHILD IN NEED
We are proud to have teamed up with the National Literacy Trust to launch ‘Gift of Books”, a unique campaign in Greater Manchester. Our aim is to achieve one objective: reducing book poverty for the region’s most disadvantaged children.
National Literacy Trust research has found that 40,000 school children in Greater Manchester don’t own a single book at home. Children’s books are a pivotal part of growing up and we wanted to help local children fall in love with reading.
So we need you! Our “Gift of Books” campaign is calling on you and your spirit of generosity and asking you to to donate a favourite childhood book – complete with a printed note explaining why you want to sha
re it (available from school). This in turn will be gifted to one of the 40,000 children in Greater Manchester who have no books of their own.To help with this, we will have a collection point from now until 31st May.
  • NSPCC Number Day

    Sat 03 Feb 2018

    NSPCC Number Day
An amazing £50.45 was raised on NSPCC Number Day!  Number Day began in the forest with mathematical activities involving measurement; the younger junior children estimated and measured ground distances, whilst the older children used a simple method of trigonometry to work out the height of trees.  The infant children had fun completing activities linked to shape.  At break time, the children bought cakes and biscuits with a number theme.  Thank you to all those who helped bake, they were delicious and very popular with the children!  The school hall was buzzing with excitement when children played Maths games with parents and carers in the afternoon and to end Number Day, a maths-based prayer was read out in assembly.

  • The Saga of a Viking Warrior

    Sun 14 Jan 2018

The saga of a Viking warrior, who raided, traded then settled in the British Isles over 1000 years ago, was brought to life in school . . .

On Friday 12th January 2018, the school had a special visitor in school - Olaf the Viking!  All the children came to school dressed in Viking costumes and enormously enjoyed a fun filled day which took them back in time!  Not only did they learn about key historical events during the Viking era in Britain (exact copies of real artefacts allowed children to learn through archaeological investigation) but  they also trained for battle and history was brought to life when children re-enacted a Viking battle scene!

    Learning included:

    Who were the Vikings?
Why did they leave their homeland?
How did the Vikings live and do battle?
What did the Vikings believe about life after death?
How do we even know the Vikings existed?
How did the Viking shape the history of modern Britain?
