• Bartering in the Forest

  This week, all the children had enormous fun bartering in the forest!  Gardeners and Seedlings created an object (such as a toy or decorative animal) out of natural materials.   Once completed, the children had to barter with each other and exchange their creations with someone else.  They then all discussed the feelings they felt whilst bartering; some children were excited and happy whereas others were disappointed or even frustrated when the object they wanted had already been exchanged.

  

• Monopoly Game Fest

  On Friday afternoon, Money Week finished with a fun Monopoly Game Fest in the school hall.  Many parents joined us as groups played Monopoly around the room.  The children sat in mixed aged groups and they all enjoyed: throwing and reading the dice; counting on; paying for houses and fines; asking for rent off other players and working out the change to be given to other players.  Ben was our overall winner with more than £4000!

  

• Mini Enterprises

  Groups of mixed-aged children set up their own mini enterprises!  They costed and created Christmas gifts which will be sold for a profit in December.  Money raised will go to charity.

  

• Buffet on a Budget

  This week, during Money Week, the children had enormous fun using and applying their mathematical skills to create a food dish on a budget!  Both parents and local residents came in to cook with groups of children who named themselves the Buffy Bakers, Fruity People, Fabulous Foodies, Sizzling Sisters & Brothers, Super Chefs, Cooking Masters and Poling (Polish/English) Cooks.  The groups first of all worked out the costing of their dish according to the weights used and after much fun preparing it, they had the pleasure of tasting all the cuisine!  Dishes ranged from lemon and coriander hummus to rice and pasta salads.

  

• Fascinating talk about Evolution raises many questions

  Mr Hughes came into school to talk to the juniors all about Evolution.  With the help of his children who are pupils in the junior class, he began with what evolution is and what BIG questions it generates; why is there evolution and were we apes?  He explained the theory of Charles Darwin and linked the Bible with evolution.  A huge poster about the Tree of Life had children asking many questions.  Mr Hughes brought in some fossils and dinosaurs and the children were very interested in learning how birds were first a cross between a dinosaur and a bird, before they branched off into their own species.  This led on to platypus, which are a cross of a duck and a reptile and children enjoyed making their own platypus out of play dough to take home.

  

• We will remember them!

  On Friday 10th November, the infants and lower junior children paraded to the Dunsop Bridge Cenotaph. There, remembrance readings and the names of the soldiers who died were read out; both children and adults placed wooden crosses in a wreath and they observed a 2 minute silence. Our upper junior children went to Clitheroe Castle museum where activities included drill training, learning about trench life and handling memorabilia, learning about the trench brothers and Gurkhas, making poppies and writing poetry about war.

  

• Visit from local Imam

  Imam Ashraf Varachhia from Clitheroe Mosque came to school on Thursday 8^th September to talk to the children about Hajj.  The talk was very interesting and children had many pre-prepared questions for the Imam.  After the visit, the children wrote a ‘diary entry’ about what they had learnt.
