Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Opening their doors in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, Toms Table is a new French-inspired bistro in the heart of the Ribble Valley. Head Chef, Tom Drinkall, hails from a local farming family and has returned to his Clitheroe roots, after working in top kitchens around the globe. He visited the children telling them all about how he designs his menu and brings the dishes together to serve in his restaurant.
From the question and answer sessions the children discovered that: Tom began to chef after leaving school and he travelled to France where he skied every day, then cooked in the evenings, he’s been to Australia and Switzerland for two years each. He's cooked for people such as David Beckham, Robbie Williams and Leonardo DiCaprio. Tom’s favourite thing to cook is Beef Wellington and Lemon Meringue for dessert.
Our Year 5 & Year 6 pupils are learning all about safer cycling today and tomorrow with the Bikeability team. Skills for life!
This week is British Science Week and this year's theme is Connections. The whole school discovered different ways there are connections within our forest setting. Connecting to our surroundings with 'Forest Bathing'; connecting with friends around a warm fire; connecting to a tree by finding their 'tree twin' and connecting with each other though team games (including camouflage found in nature).
The school parliament visited Milly's Smiles charity in Clayton-le-Moors. Lorraine Hargreaves, Milly's mum and founder of the charity showed us around the premises and explained the work the charity does; providing a Milly Bag to every family whose child has been admitted to Manchester, Alder Hey and Leeds Children’s Hospitals with a new cancer diagnosis. The pupils were presented with a thank you certificate for the money they raised prior to Christmas.
The Year 2 and Year 6 pupils had a lesson delivered by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue team. The lesson focused on increasing knowledge about fire risks and awareness of what to do in the event of a fire.
It covered:
On Wednesday 18th January 2023, the juniors welcomed Nathan and Chelsie, Project manager and Health & Safety advisor for L&W Wilson Ltd. The company have begun demolishing some of the buildings in Dunsop Bridge as part of the redevelopment project. The talk about demolition and building site dangers and safety was very information and the children engaged very well, asking and responding to many questions. They enjoyed trying on some of the PPE.
Lara Thompson, the Duchy of Lancaster Redevelopment Project Surveyor, came to visit our children to tell them all about the new developments starting in Dunsop Bridge, January 2023. We are going to be doing a long-term human geography project of fieldwork over the next few years.
We were delighted to be the only school in Lancashire to receive one of Queen Elizabeth II's Tree of Trees from the Living Sculpture outside Buckingham Palace during the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations in June this year. We were in fact only 1 of 8 to receive one in Lancashire (the others were planted in parks etc...). The tree is a ROWAN tree.
The infant children had made tree crafts and written on them their take of the importance of trees and their opinion of trees. The juniors wrote a poem called The Tree of Life, which was inspired by a story called ‘What Did the Tree See?’, written by Charlotte Guillain and illustrated by Sam Usher.
In Charlotte’s story the reader follows an oak tree through its life from the Viking invasion in 1000 CE through to modern-day Britain, cataloguing what each stage of the oak has seen. The junior's poem is about what our Rowan Tree might see here in Dunsop as it grows.
The event held on Monday 14th November was attended by several local dignitaries including Martin Ainscough the High Sheriff of Lancashire and Councillor Cosima Towneley, Mayor of Burnley 2022/23.
The Towneley family built the St Hubert's RC Church in Dunsop Bridge in 1865 and the Thorneyholme RC Primary School (down the road from the church) a year later in 1866.
Daisy as May Queen 2022 - 2023 placed the plaque in the ground.
The Queen loved Dunsop Bridge and the surrounding area, which is part of the Duchy Estates.
We were absolutely delighted to receive our letter from Lancashire Lieutenancy which stated that:
We are pleased to gift this special tree set in a pot embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher
to your organisation in recognition of the vital contribution that you make to your
community, and as a symbol of a greener environment for the future in the United
Kingdom.
We miss Queen Elizabeth II dearly and we are all truly touched to be able to remember her with one of the Tree of Trees, which stood tall on the living sculpture outside Buckingham Palace over the weekend of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June this year. Its purpose to give the message of hope, regeneration and optimism to our nation and the world.
The school celebrated World Mental Health Day. “Just one small positive thought can change your whole day.” The children wrote kind messages to each other, bringing a moment of positivity to their day.
The juniors enjoyed a visit from a Roman centurion, and successfully learnt drills and commands in Latin and all about Roman soldiers. This was a WOW session, prior to starting their history atopic this half term.
